According to the Mayo Clinic, about a third of people between 65 and 75 in the United States have some degree of hearing loss. And that percentage reaches 50 percent for those over 75. In this episode Mary and Fred talk with knowledgeable guests who provide information about different aspects of hearing loss and the assistive devices available to them. In part one, they are joined by Dr. Charlotte Yeh, Chief Medical Officer for AARP Services and EverSound’s Vice President of Marketing, Deb Citrin. They discuss the challenges faced by individuals with hearing loss, as well as assistive options that are available today, and they share a few enlightening stories to bring the information to life.
Part two of the podcast features 11-year-old Ally Tumblin and her mom, Melissa Tumblin, the inspiration behind Ally’s Act, H.R. 477 and S. 41, national level bills now before Congress ensuring that private insurance companies provide coverage for osseointegrated hearing devices and Cochlear Implants. Melissa and Ally share their story, describe how the bill came to be, and talk about founding Ear Community, a global nonprofit for individuals with Microtia and Atresia.
